Read full description of the books:

This is a very basic starting point if you want to get an idea of life in Singapore during the British-occupied time. The story is a little messy, as each section is told by a different protagonist, and they each add to the story as it goes.
Personally, I would recommend finding a book that was more in-depth. There were some cultural points in the book, but they were very superficial. It might be worth it to find another starting point, because this book would have you believe that everyone got along, sent money back "home", and taught each other their own languages.

Good starting point, but don't stop here.
